About Timmreck & McNicol Jewelers

In 1939, when Bate's Jewelers in Sheridan, Oregon, decided to close its doors, Alexander Timmreck (already an accomplished horologist and bench jeweler) saw an opportunity to establish a jewelry store of his own.

After meeting with Mr. Bate, the two shook hands, signed the paperwork, and Timmreck Jewelers was born.

Soon afterward, Alex wrote to Claribel Husmann in Minnesota, telling her he was finally ready to marry her. She accepted. Following their wedding, the newlyweds made the journey back to Sheridan. Claribel welcomed customers and managed the sales floor while Alex spent his days at the bench, repairing watches and creating fine jewelry.

 
1940s

Following his service in World War II, Bob McNicol (husband to Ruth McNicol, Claribel's niece and maid of honor) returned home and began learning the trade under Alex. During this time, the company expanded by opening a second location in Forest Grove.

Bob quickly developed a passion for watchmaking and jewelry repair.

 
1959

In 1959, the business opened its third location at 428 NE Third Street in downtown McMinnville. With Bob McNicol becoming a partner, the company officially became Timmreck & McNicol Jewelers.

More than six decades later, that same historic building remains our home and has welcomed generations of families through its doors.

 
1960s

Just five years after incorporating Timmreck & McNicol Jewelers, Alex passed away during what was expected to be a routine surgery.

The incorporation he had helped establish made it possible for future generations to purchase ownership with more ease in the company and ensured the business could continue beyond its founders.

Following Alex's passing, Claribel retained a 49% ownership stake, intentionally allowing the McNicol family to hold the controlling shares. She never remarried, instead dedicating her life to the business, her family, her friends, and the community she loved.

 
1988

The passing of Claribel in 1988 was deeply felt throughout Yamhill County. Her dedication to her customers and community had made her one of McMinnville's most beloved figures.

After her passing, longtime manager David Spalding approached the McNicol family to ask what plans they had for Claribel's shares of the company and whether it would be possible for him to purchase them. Before making a decision, the McNicols spoke with the next generation of their family, who unanimously agreed that David was the right person to help carry the company forward.

With their blessing, David became a partner of Timmreck & McNicol Jewelers, ensuring the business would continue under someone who had already dedicated years of his life to its success.

 
2016

When Bob McNicol passed away in February 2016, Dave recognized it was time to begin preparing the next generation of leadership.

He asked his second-born, Jean Spalding, whether they would consider joining the family business as a partner. Jean requested a trial period in management before making a commitment and quickly discovered a passion for the repair department. They went on to specialize in jewelry restoration and custom creation.

 
2024

After celebrating the store's 85th Christmas season, Dave retired from day-to-day management, leaving Jean to lead the company into its next chapter.

 
2025

Timmreck & McNicol Jewelers completed the most significant renovation in its history.

The store underwent a complete transformation, including all-new electrical and plumbing systems, an expanded repair shop, a modernized showroom, and a redesigned customer experience. The renovation was an investment in the future of the business, allowing us to better serve our customers while preserving the history of our downtown home.

Today, Timmreck & McNicol Jewelers is proudly operated by Jean Spalding and Jordan Simpson-Spalding, while David and Teresa Spalding continue as partial owners.

As the fourth generation of leadership, Jean and Jo are committed to preserving the values that have guided the company for more than 85 years: exceptional craftsmanship, honest service, and treating every customer like family. While embracing new technology, expanding our in-house capabilities, and investing in the future, our mission remains the same as it was in 1939.
